This Palm Springs house provides an oasis in the desert
This incredible modern desert house was designed by the architectural studio Woods + Dangaran, located in the hills above Palm Springs, California. The architects sited this dwelling to establish a deep connection with its surrounding desert landscape. They also focused on creating this same relationship when it came to devising the floor plan and selecting the finishes.
Surrounded by boulders and spanning a natural arroyo, this 3,800-square-foot structure is lifted above existing site features, yet still retains a powerful connection to the earth. The architecture-emphasizing horizontal lines, natural materials, and visual and physical linkages between indoors and out-celebrates and elevates the tenets of desert modernism.
Exterior walls of earth-toned plaster and textured concrete masonry units tie the slab-on-grade structure to the site. Deep roof overhangs are wrapped in brass paneling. Strategically-placed floor-to-ceiling glazing frames stunning views of the desert in all directions.
A glass-enclosed bridge connects two wings of the dwelling and provides a central atrium that can be viewed from practically every room.
What We Love: This Palm Springs house is beautifully integrated into its desert environment thanks to its material selection and careful siting on the property. An indoor-outdoor connection is established courtesy of expansive walls of glazing, framing the fabulous views while flooding the interiors with natural light. Overall, we are loving the minimal design, focusing the occupants’ attention on the incredible setting that surrounds this dwelling.
