A Federal Colonial waterfront home gets a stunning
An 1860s vintage Federal Colonial waterfront home was completely restored by Patrick Ahearn Architect along with Colonial Reproductions, located in the Edgartown Village Historic District, Massachusetts. Over the years, modifications stripped the historic value from this waterfront, clapboard-fronted, two-and-a-half-story, Federal Colonial former captain’s home, built between 1886 and 1898.
Thanks to discovered late-nineteenth-century photographs of the house, a visual language was developed for the restoration and extension that brought it back to life. A re-poured foundation allowed for the creation of a walk-out lower level, invisible from the street but open to the harbor behind, and a new sunroom based on a porch from the archives, which now enjoys sweeping vistas. The original foundation was crumbling and was not supportable. Therefore the entire house was lifted in place and a new brick-veneered foundation was installed under the existing house. The house was then lowered back in place and the preservation of the house began in earnest.
This house not only is a wonderful example of sensitive preservation, but its contribution to the greater good and the historic village is equally important. The residence in its present form enhances the overall streetscape and plays an important role in unifying the entire South Water Street imagery due to its central and harbor front location and thereby enhancing the built environment within Edgartown village.
What We Love: This federal colonial home underwent a complex restoration to bring it back to its former glory. A visually striking exterior facade welcomes guests inside, through a beautiful green-painted front door. Interior spaces are infused with warmth thanks to wood floors and ceiling beams. Charming details can be found throughout with nods to this home’s historical past. Large windows frame captivating views of the water, providing a relaxed vibe.

Note: Be sure to have a look at a couple of other fantastic home tours that we have showcased here on One Kindesign in the state of Massachusetts: See inside the dreamiest beach house on the island of Nantucket and Luminous modern home surrounded by beautiful woods in Massachusetts.
Antique floors and timber beams throughout lend historic authenticity, while expanses of windows celebrate water views.
The interior was thoughtfully reconstructed with new spatial allocations to respond to the topography and site conditions.
The redevelopment included a pool, cabana, and an extensive landscaping master plan that included bluestone patios and native plantings.
